Project
Port of Seattle – Seattle, Washington
For the Port of Seattle, environmental graphic design and wayfinding work was conducted for multiple maritime facilities. A comprehensive branded signage program was developed for the Port’s new Smith Cove Cruise Ship Terminal (Terminal 91), featuring vibrant graphics both inside and outside the facility designed in the spirit of departing passengers to create an exciting and welcoming atmosphere for cruise travelers. The program utilized clean, simple lines to accent the terminal’s open architectural design and bright color palette, with international symbols used liberally throughout to serve the diverse international passenger base. Exterior signage was designed to be portable, allowing for easy deployment and reconfiguration during the seasonal cruise operation. The signage work combined functional wayfinding with celebratory design elements that enhanced the passenger experience from arrival through embarkation. Additionally, multi-modal ferry terminal signage was designed to help passengers navigate the complex connections between different transportation modes at Seattle’s ferry terminals, addressing the challenges of facilities that serve multiple types of transit services.
The work for the Port of Seattle demonstrated expertise in creating passenger-oriented signage systems for maritime facilities, where wayfinding must accommodate travelers who may be unfamiliar with the facility and are often managing luggage and coordinating with travel companions. The colorful, engaging design approach for Smith Cove Cruise Ship Terminal reflected an understanding that cruise terminals serve both functional and experiential purposes, setting the tone for passengers’ vacation experiences while efficiently moving people through the facility.
